How run coaching works
Coaching at it’s heart is all about you. Everything about your coaching experience is tailored to you. Within that though, there are some key areas we’ll focus on to help you get started.
If you want the short version: after the initial consultation, review and planning sessions. We’ll stay in touch, chat about how each run goes, plan your training in two week blocks, and review each block before it begins.
The level of communication between us is decided by you. We can chat and meet as often or as little as you’d like. Regular dialogue is encouraged and the fortnight review is strongy recommended.
I’m always working on the longer term plan in the background, but as the longer term plan is prone to change based on how things go, we work in two weeks.
There’s no contracts, you can quit coaching at any time. Payment is made in two week installments at the start of each two week block.
-
When you first express an interest in coaching, a comprehensive consultation about you and your running is the first step.
At this point, we’ll normally have a chat and go through all the basics; your running history, goals, any injuries, complexities around your schedule. All that fun stuff.
-
This bit is mostly me. During this time i’ll examine everything from our consultation and draft a plan.
This plan will outline how I think you should approach running. It’ll include a simple week plan, where we’ll focus your training and everything else in between including how we will work around any issues identified.
-
Once we talk through the plan and you’re happy, we can start work.
This involves ongoing communication about how traininig is going, tweaking the plan based on your feedback.
At interval of your choosing but preferably every two weeks, we’ll reivew the plan for the upcoming fortnight, tweak it if needed, and continue.
How much does run coaching cost?
Coaching is A$70, paid every two weeks.
Every two weeks I’ll share the plan for the upcoming fortnight. I’m always working on the longer term plan in the background, but as the longer term plan is prone to change based on how things go, we work in two week chunks.
Feedback after each run is encouraged but if you’d prefer a hands off approach, that is ok too.
You can cancel at any time without any amount of notice. No contracts.
Common questions and concerns about run coaching
Common concerns
-
This is the most common concern people have.
The truth is though, there is no minimum speed limit to wanting some help.
There is never any judgment from me, my only role here is to help you in whatever way you need.
-
This is completely normal. Most new runners are terrified of being seen running. They maybe stick to treadmills or runnning at night.
This may be normal, but it’s not needed. Most people are too busy thinking about themselves to notice you running.
When was the last time you took serious notice of a runner and was still thinking about it more than 20 minutes later.
-
If you’ve had a history of injury or are just scared of it, that’s ok and normal.
My role is to guide you through running without injury, helping you identify the normal aches and pains, as well as the pains that should be of concern.
-
Everything about your running is yours. Your stats, history and goals are yours and remain that way, even when being coached.
If you’d like a more hands off approach to coaching where my role is more about guidance than structured planning, we’ll work that way.
Some people prefer more or less autonamy over their running and that’s fine, I’m here to help you however you feel it’s best.
-
This is true. Many people don’t need a coach.
I recommend people pay a coach when two main criteria are met:
They can afford it, and properly afford it without money stress.
They feel the extra expensive and help given as a result, will be a net positive for them in any amount of ways.
Common questions
-
No, absolutely not. I despise this method of keeping people on board. You are free to cancel or pause at any moment, without notice. You do have to let me know though.
If you cancel in the middle of a two week block you’ve already paid for, there are no refunds but any planning we’ve done and notes taken is all yours forever.
-
A$70 every two weeks. This aligns with how we’ll plan your schedule.
-
This really does depend. Lots of the value from coaching comes from personalisation. We can definitely chat about it though!
I do offer plenty of free group sessions though! These aren’t personalised.
-
Yes. I’ve helped new runners do everything from their first 5k, to their first marathon.
I’ve helped these same runners reach time goals at all of these distances too.
Let’s see if coaching is right for you.
Coaching isn’t the best route for everyone and I will be the first person to say that.
If you’re thinking about coaching but you’re not sure, please feel free to get in touch. The first step is always learning more about your situation and being honest about whether coaching can help.
What happens when you get in touch?
I’ll get back to you with some questions about you and your goals
We’ll then organise a chat to see if coaching is right for you.
If it’s not the best option for you, we leave it there. If we feel coaching can help you, then we’ll move forward from there.
This stage is completely free and without obligation or contracts.
